Favorite school science project: For my seventh-grade science fair project, I tested the relationship between yellow and white paint and how they conduct heat. After many years of overheating on the school bus, I wanted to prove that they should all be painted white on top! While my lab setup was much what you would expect from a middle school kid, I did get the results I wanted.
Adam Kohlbus
Senior Associate, Operations
Adam Kohlbus is the Senior Operations Associate at the Bayer Co.Lab. In this role, he works to assist with all operational and events needs. Whether it’s stocking a café, onboarding a new company or resident, coordinating the logistics to make an event a success, or just cracking a joke, Adam is your guy! Adam previously worked in Operations within the field of Artistic Administration, where he worked for organizations such as the New England Conservatory of Music, Curtis Institute of Music, and The Philadelphia Orchestra. Adam earned his Bachelor’s in Viola Performance from Temple University and his Master’s in Viola Performance from McGill University. Outside of work, he enjoys exercising, cooking and baking, playing video games, trying new breweries, and seeing live music.
Favorite Science Experiment: For my high school AP Physics science fair, I did an experiment where I investigated the effect that torsion (twisting) waves play on a bowed string instrument. I took a bass string, attached copper coils with epoxy, and positioned it in within an electromagnetic field in such a way that when the string was bowed, the torsion waves caused the coils to move and exhibit flux. Although I learned that epoxy is not necessarily my friend, I had a blast combining science and my musical side.

Favorite school science project: There’s really only one I remember, and it was determining which toothpaste made a coffee-soaked, porcelain tile whiter. I was ahead of the game in recognizing people’s fanaticism with white teeth, but obviously didn’t capitalize on it beyond a poorly executed 3rd-grade science experiment.

Favorite science experiment: I’ve always liked hard puzzles. In elementary school, I read about the challenges of accessing fresh water when at sea and thought it was crazy someone could die of thirst, surrounded by water. I built a complicated contraption, trying to invent a small, portable desalination machine. It technically “worked”, but let’s just say there are probably easier ways to generate fresh water!

Favorite Science Experiment: In high school I had a science fair project about the Bystander Effect, a social psychological theory about how people are less likely to help others in public because they believe someone else will help them. My friends and I would go out in different areas of Boston and put this theory to the test by pretending to need help and record how many people helped us compared to how many did not. Let’s just say not a lot of people helped us! But that’s okay! We had a lot of fun during our experiment, and we learned that this theory is in fact a real philosophy that people use when in a crowd. We also learned for ourselves to take the initiative and help someone in need even if we think someone else might help.

Favorite Science Project: I don’t have much of a life science background, but if you call plucking 6 strings made of nickel and then beholding with astonishment that the vibrations can be captured through small magnetic bars with enameled wires called “pickups,” and then have that vibration travel via copper wires wrapped in a dielectric insulator and plastic coating into a device to amplify MUSIC into the ears science, then that’s my fav.

Favorite school science project: Middle school project: create ‘a novel’ product that you can share with others. I chose to ‘cook’ and created healthy lentil chips by using only lentil paste and transglutaminase enzyme (it glues proteins together). It was certainly not the tastiest snack but was the only edible project of the class.

Favorite science experiment: In my high school physics class, I had to build a car out of popsicle sticks, cotton balls and a sheet of paper that would protect an egg during a roll down a 50° ramp. My partner and I were one of two teams whose egg didn’t crack!

Favorite Science Experiment: My favorite experiment that I can remember is working with a team of my fellow 8th graders to create a rocket that we could successfully launch with an air compressor. The rocket also had to have a parachute attached to it that would deploy on its own that would help it land safely in the grass.

Favorite Science Experiment: It’s so hard to choose between my favorite lab processes (precipitation micronization and dialysis to name a few). But, to me, there’s nothing more satisfying than rotovapping. There is an elegant combination of lab techniques required to execute a flawless rotovap session and powder collection, it’s something I definitely miss about my lab days!

Favorite Science Project: In 10th grade I performed my first gel electrophoreses experiment. Although the lab steps did not seem like much, such as using a microwave to make the gel ourselves, we were ultimately successful and were able to see the DNA bands in the gel with the help of fluorescence. This lab helped inspire me to pursue a career path in the sciences.

Favorite school science project: I grew up in a home where music, spanning all decades and genres, was always on. In elementary school I heard music could affect the growth of plants, and so I wanted to test the theory. While I did not understand the mechanisms behind it at the time, I was excited to see how classical music resulted in more lush growth, compared to the control plants with no music.
Wallis Goss
Associate Manager, Hiring & Training
Wallis Goss is the Associate Manager, Training & Hiring at LabCentral. She is responsible for managing trainings for all LabCentral staff covering a wide range of topics. She works with external presenters and leads the creation of new internal trainings to ensure our employees receive the best information and skills. Wallis received her Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies from Bucknell University and has spent her career teaching environmental education, working with high school exchange students, and planning trainings for attorneys. In her free time, Wallis enjoys reading, getting outside, crafts, cooking and spending time with family.
Favorite Science Experiment: I took an environmental science class during a semester program in high school. Throughout the semester, we each chose a plot of land on the school’s property in Vermont that became our Science Site. Through all we learned during our classes, we were able to gain an understanding of our site and tell the history of the place from the 1700s to present day. I loved learning how land and nature can tell a story - I still drive down New England roads, see stone walls or trees growing in specific ways and wonder what the history of that place is!
