What is the role?

Are you an EHS professional interested in working with a diverse group of early-stage biotech companies, researchers, and spaces? LabCentral is seeking an EHS Lead, reporting to the Senior Manager. This role will take you in and out of the lab, ensuring that resident start-up companies have a safe and sustainable experience at LabCentral. LabCentral's range of incoming companies and varied facilities provide a broad opportunity for EHS candidates to explore all facets of a robust EHS program. We are looking for a self-directed, organized individual who enjoys working with scientists to understand their cutting-edge science and support their safety and compliance needs.

What will I do?  

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and adapt critical EHS documentation such as Chemical Hygiene Plans, Emergency Action and Contingency Plans (including site maps and trainings), and laboratory policies.
  • Ensure training records of research and support staff, as well as any regulatory-required record keeping (such as shipping manifests for hazardous and biohazards materials and chemical inventory) is always up to date and well organized.
  • Compose and distribute communications to researchers on safety-related matters.
  • Organize and deliver safety trainings for relevant operations as needed; including regulatory-required trainings such as Emergency Evacuation and Bloodborne Pathogen training.
  • Complete incident investigations to ensure root cause and corrective actions are identified and implemented, as well as maintain records and report incidents when required.
  • Complete hazard assessments on new equipment or procedures to capture any potential safety or facility issues.
  • Conduct and participate in organization of emergency and evacuation planning and response and serve as an emergency coordinator. This includes serving as the primary point of contact during an emergency onsite requiring on call 24/7 availability for emergency assistance.
  • Manage laboratory chemical and biohazardous waste disposal programs, working with contractors and disposal services to set up and support waste streams for different processes.
  • Complete regular walkthroughs of lab spaces to ensure that safe work practices are observed, lab spaces and equipment comply with any policies and regulations and give feedback on lab spaces and programs.
  • Host and organize regular information sessions and safety meetings with LabCentral staff and residents, including safety forums and “office hours”.
  • Provide assistance to the EHS Sr Manager for permit applications and maintenance and other regulatory obligations.
  • Work directly with our vendors and partners to ensure they are meeting our expectations and following our safety and environmental policies.

What will I bring?

Desired qualifications:

  • A degree in a science related field or equivalent field experience.
  • 2-3 years’ experience in an EHS role, experience in the biotechnology sector is a plus.
  • Must be willing to obtain, or already have RCRA, DOT, HAZWOPER 8hr certifications, additional certifications related to the EHS field are not required but welcome.
  • Experience in local, state, and federal EHS regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to think critically and implement proper controls to ensure a safe workplace for all our residents, staff and visitors.
  • Comfortability in lab spaces housing hazardous, biohazardous, and high value materials
  • Ability to manage emergency situations including medical emergencies, chemical spills, and fire alarms in calm, collected manner.
  • Skilled in assessing data on various lab processes for sustainability and disposal purposes.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Be a champion of safety and proactively look for opportunities to encourage staff and residents to do the same.

Work Environment:

  • Work onsite in Cambridge and Boston, MA during regular business hours, with rare after-hours as needed
  • Ability to stand for long periods, ability to move around an office and lab environment, and ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 25 pounds

Compensation:

Our compensation philosophy is intentional and researched to align with average market salaries; comprehensive, generous benefits to support overall well-being; and parity with our existing and future team members. Below details the value of what our compensation package may look like, but specific details pertaining to an individual will vary.    

Salary range: $57,000-$74,000 along with the potential to earn a bonus of 8% based on company performance.   

Approximate monetary value of benefits (based off an individual – dependents increase value): $22,000.
