Lab Centra The Dish George Church
A Conversation with George Church

LabCentral’s The Dish with Johannes series dishes up candid conversations with biotech’s brightest minds, offering an inside look at the discoveries shaping the future. Hosted by LabCentral President & Co-founder Johannes Fruehauf, MD, PhD, the series spotlights pioneers from the LabCentral network driving scientific and business innovation.

For this special live episode, we welcomed Dr. George Church, a genomic trailblazer who has co-founded over 50 startups—including more than 15 at LabCentral. The discussion explored his groundbreaking work, from developing the first direct genomic sequencing method to de-extinction efforts at Colossal Biosciences, where he’s working to revive species like the woolly mammoth.

Church also tackled topics like demystifying GMOs, the ethics of biotech, and the entrepreneurial mindset behind his many ventures.

Named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People in 2017, Church continues to push the boundaries of synthetic biology. The Dish LIVE offered attendees a rare opportunity to hear from a true visionary—leaving them inspired to take on biotech’s next big challenges.

"In my lab and in my ecosystem, I try to say, the problem isn't failure, right? Embrace failure. We've got a million ideas. Four of them are winners. And so why do we worry if we fail a million times? What's important is trying to find that winner."

Core Facilities Program
Research Resources Expanded

LabCentral’s Core Facilities Program connects residents to specialized equipment and expertise across a prestigious network of institutions. While our in-house capabilities are extensive, this program ensures that even the most complex research needs are met—without the overhead of independent access. From advanced imaging to high-throughput screening, we make it seamless for startups to tap into the right tools at the right time.

We clear a path by:

  • Guiding residents through the access processes
  • Facilitating direct connections to expert contacts
  • Managing transactions through the Stork, LabCentral’s proprietary purchasing system, consolidating billing and invoices
  • Fostering peer connections with residents who have previously used these facilities

Core Facilities Relationships

LabCentral is proud to partner with the following institutions to maximize startup's access and efficiency.

The Orange Grove: Cross-site Access

In 2024, we launched The Orange Grove, giving residents cross-site access to specialized lab equipment and resources across multiple LabCentral locations. Previously, residents worked with the tools at their designated site. Now, a simple badge tap unlocks the breadth of instrumentation in our network.

With a quick application and training, startups can expand their capabilities, collaborate more seamlessly, and take full advantage of LabCentral’s powerhouse of resources.

Science & Sips: Sharing & Shaping Strategies

In 2024, we launched Science & Sips, casual gatherings where residents chat about science, research tools, and industry trends over boba, smoothies, and great conversation. Led by Lyndsey Rissin, LabCentral’s Director of Science Strategy, these sessions foster two-way exchanges—residents gain insights and resources to work smarter and more efficiently, while our team gathers real-time feedback to refine LabCentral’s scientific offerings. In its inaugural year, Science & Sips hosted four sessions with participation from over 40 companies.

Equipped for Discovery: Tools That Drive Progress
A good tool improves the way you work. A great tool improves the way you think. –Jeff Duntemann

Our extensive equipment portfolio—over 5,000 cutting-edge instruments across all sites—ensures that our resident scientists have access to the best new technology that would otherwise be out of reach for most early-stage startups. In 2024 alone, resident scientists made 25,056 equipment reservations, logging an astounding 81,273 hours of use—accelerating breakthroughs that might not have been possible elsewhere. That’s nearly a decade of non-stop innovation happening across our labs in one year.

HPLC & LC/MS Systems

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS) are essential for analyzing oligonucleotides, small molecules, peptides, and proteins. LabCentral’s Analytical Chemistry labs are equipped with seven state-of-the-art systems designed to support a range of workflows, from peptide mapping to proteomics. With hands-on training and expert support, residents can accelerate their research using advanced instruments from Agilent and Waters.

Biolayer Interferometry Lab Central Equipment 01

Biolayer Interferometry for Molecular Interaction Analysis

Biolayer interferometry (BLI) provides real-time, label-free analysis of molecular interactions, making it an essential tool for characterizing binding kinetics and affinities. LabCentral’s first dedicated label-free BLI instrument, the Gator Plus from Gator Bio, offers researchers a powerful way to study macromolecular kinetics and assess pharmacological potential with precision and efficiency.

Digital PCR

Digital PCR (dPCR) revolutionizes nucleic acid quantification by delivering absolute molecule counts without reference standards. With heightened precision and the ability to detect rare targets, dPCR is an invaluable asset for researchers working in genomics, oncology, and infectious disease diagnostics. LabCentral offers access to this technology through the Qiagen QIAcuity One and ThermoFisher Absolute Q systems.

"Shoutout to Damla Cehreli (Lead, Lab Operations, LabCentral)! I joined LabCentral in May of last year when I became part of the Phorum team. This was a career shift for me, and Damla eased this transition by helping me understand the analytical instruments. Both Layne Kasprzyk (Associate Manager, Lab Operations, LabCentral) and Damla are always ready to help, and I so appreciate their presence at LabCentral."
